Care Starts with the Fiber
A soft surface does not tell you how a rug should be cleaned. Fiber, backing, dyes and construction all matter. Use the material and care notes on each product page, then check the label on the rug itself before choosing a cleaning method.
Natural wool: treat the whole construction carefully
Wool has a different care routine from synthetic fibers. Meadowline’s listed routine is dust collection, so start with gentle vacuuming suitable for the rug and avoid pulling at tassels. Do not assume it can go into a washing machine. For a deeper clean, consult a professional experienced with wool rugs and describe the backing and fringe.
Test a proposed spot-cleaning treatment in an inconspicuous area only if the care label allows it. A texture that looks durable in a photograph is not evidence that it can tolerate hot water, strong chemicals or steam.
Polyester: construction still changes the answer
Some polyester rugs in our collection are machine washable, some specify hand washing, and others do not provide a wet-cleaning method. The fiber name alone is not permission to machine wash. Quiet Fleece and Dappled Gray have machine-wash information; Weathered Stone calls for hand washing.
Before washing an approved design, compare its size with your machine’s capacity. A rug that fits when dry may become too heavy when wet. Follow the label for temperature, detergent and drying, and plan a drying area before starting.
Polypropylene entry rugs: begin at the surface
Ribbed entry textures collect visible debris in their surface pattern. Remove loose debris before using a cleaning or scrubbing method allowed by the label. Let the rug and floor dry fully before placing the rug back, and check that the backing is suitable for your floor finish.
Respond to a spill without spreading it
Lift away solids, then gently blot liquid with a clean, colorfast cloth. Avoid vigorous rubbing, which can push a spill deeper or disturb the pile. Stop if color transfers or the construction changes, and seek material-specific advice. Never mix cleaning products.
Keep edges and texture in good order
Check edges periodically, reposition furniture when needed and keep the floor beneath clean and dry. Rotate a rug if the room layout allows it to distribute exposure to light and foot traffic. Do not cut loose fibers or apply heat to flatten a fold without instructions appropriate to that rug.
When instructions are missing
Do not guess. Contact [email protected] with your rug name and a photograph of the care label. We can help you interpret the available product details. This guide offers general care planning; it does not replace the instructions for your particular rug.
